PINSPIRATION: SUMMER SOFTNESS

PINSPIRATION: SUMMER SOFTNESS

Monday, May 26, 2014
Maxi dresses, Fold over clutch, strappy sandals, Anthrolpologie necklaces, long necklaces, Pinterest, Forever 21 dresses, Twist Me Pretty

The warmth of summer is in the air and with it comes outfit ideas. Pinterest being the main hub of outfit inspiration. Speaking of Pinterest, link me up in the comments to your Pinterest. I'm always on the lookout for more pinspiration! I put together this board of summer softness as encouragement to bring in some feminine touches to this summers wardrobe!

_________________________________________________________

| The Maxi. Summer can be a hard time to wear a maxi, yet, it somehow feels like one of the best times to wear one too. Heat + long dress. Explain that one to me! If you pick the right maxi you can rock it through summer without overheating! I have a few rules when donning the maxi; No one wants to look swallowed up by their dress or have the dreaded cling. Here are four things to keep in mind when wearing a maxi:

One | Acknowledge Your Height. Short girls beware. I'm short so stepping all over a maxi hem is all too familiar. Hemlines that are too long will only make you look shorter.  We're already vertically challenged, so let's make this easier on ourselves! A maxi dress ( or skirt ) should just graze the top of your ankles. Keep that in mind while shopping and you're golden.

Two | Create A Waist. Some maxis are cut more to your shape, and if you find one of those, hold onto it and never let go like Rose in Titanic. I'll never let go Jack. For boxier maxis, nip in the waist at it's narrowest point, just under your ribcage, with a belt. This will accentuate or create your hourglass shape, and bonus: give the appearance of longer legs!

Three | Later Jersey. This is short and sweet. Avoid jersey maxis at all costs. Jersey clings to every lump, bump, and jiggle. Sure, you could pop on a pair of spanx, but it's summer and no one wants lock themselves into a sweat box! Pick a fabric that just sweeps or skims over your skin. Now a high quality cotton maxi can really be your friend, so don't toss that baby out with the bath water.

Four | The Split Leg Is Your Friend. Go for a single split, or double split if you're feeling bold. Again, if you're short this extra peak of leg with help elongate your silhouette. Just remember, slits that are too high give way too much peak of leg and can actually cut your leg off in the wrong place and make you look shorter. Funny how that works, huh? Keep it classy!

Some fun maxi silhouettes:
Halter Neck + Side Slit
The Bohemian + Sash Belt
The Sleek Cutout
The V-neck + Lace

| The Clutch. I'm all about fold over clutches right now. They really are a fantastic match for a maxi ensemble. And there are some darling options out there! A small shoulder strap or crossbody is always an option, but why not go for something a little trendy? Your purse is an accessory after all!

The Fold Over:
Cranberry + Ebony
Grey + Camel
Papaya + Chocolate Brown

| The Necklace. I'm a necklace kind of girl. They just add something fun and unique to an outfit without overwhelming the whole look. And that is a dual win! With maxis I love a necklace that hits mid to just below the sternum, so thats about mid ribcage. So many skeletal names. I call them midi necklaces. It adds interest and draws the eye down your torso. More lengthening!

Midi Necklace:
Gold + Delicate Leaves
Gold + Emarald Pendant
Coral + Crystal

| The Sandals. A little shimmer never hurt anyone. A slightly glitzy sandal can add so much to an outfit. I love sandals with maxis, though I have a fear of open toe shoes. Don't ask why! It's a painful two part story that my toes still haven't recovered from! That aside, sandals are the perfect pairing for a summer maxi, especially if they have a touch of shimmer, sheen, or pattern. Get ready to break out those bright Essie polishes you've been saving up!

The Touch Of Shimmer:
Strappy + Pewter
Gladiator + Snakeskin
T-strap + Gold
and a wedge for good measure (short girls unite! )
Wedge + Pewter

| The Hair. This is not on the pinspiration board, but we certainly can't forget about hair. It's equally as important and as much an accessory as the purse, jewelry, and shoes! You can never go wrong with long tousled waves, but a sassy updo can help with the heat of summer and gives your maxi a little extra room to shine!

Summer Updos Revamped:
The Twisted Ponytail
The Knotted Bun
The Faux Hawk Braid
The Faux Bob

What are your favorite summer go-to pieces and styles?

THE COLOR RUN: THAT TIME I BATTLED A RAINBOW AND WON

THE COLOR RUN: THAT TIME I BATTLED A RAINBOW AND WON

Tuesday, May 20, 2014
The Color Run, The Color Run Savannah, kaleidoscope tour

I was extremely excited at the check-in party, but I'm not entirely sure that I can properly express through words how excited I was the day of, or how much fun The Color Run actually was! Even if three friends bailed. One the morning of. Thanks a lot! I'm not a morning person, but I crawled my way out of bed at 5:30 in the AM to do this Color Run. The run was an hour away in Savannah, GA so a car ride was in order. Am I the only one that is lulled to sleep like a baby on car rides? I didn't think so. You're just sittin' back there, eyes droopy, head bobbing, using the seatbelt as a pillow..

Anyway.

I learned something about myself while waiting in the happiest start line ever: I get really psyched in massive group situations early in the morning. Especially when there's a guy in neon green shorts + headband in front of me stretching and bouncing around like he's hopped up on red bull. I get all "yeah man, we 'bout to take off like a cheetah!!" excited. I could have sprinted all five kilometers.

The Color Run was everything that I was hoping it would be, but better! It will forever be that time I battled a rainbow and won. If you have the chance to do The Color Run, do it!! It is such a fun experience. Especially the shindig (festival) at the end. There are swag throws every little bit and color throws everything fifteen minutes or so. It's the best! Lucky for us, we made friends with "Goliath" during the festival and he caught a bunch of color bags for the color throws. The guy was ridiculously tall. He'd just snatch stuff right out of the air. I think I ended up with every single color by the end of it. The blue stuck on the most. I'm stained. I look like a smurf!

The color stations at every kilometer are tremendous fun and ever so lung clogging. I made it through pink with not a grain of color on me. Unacceptable. Purple got me and my iPhone pretty good though. The color directly thrown into my mouth..twice was somehow a part of the fun too.

The guy with the leaf blower attempted to blast some of the color off of everyone after the festival, but it didn't really work. The picture makes me laugh out loud though! I'm still on a bit of a Color Run high. I'm already signed up for The color Run in Charleston. If you live in the area and are doing the Charleston Color Run, Tweet me! We can have a blogger meet up!

I'm going to leave you in peace now and let the selfies speak for themselves!

Have you ever done The Color Run? What was your favorite part?

THE COLOR RUN: CHECK-IN

THE COLOR RUN: CHECK-IN

Saturday, May 17, 2014
So today is seriously an awesome day! Why? Because It's Color Run Saturday!! I've wanted to do The Color Run for a while now. I couldn't stand it! So, when I found out the Kaleidoscope Tour was hitting Savannah, GA, I frolicked through the house like a giddy little kid. Of course, I informed my friends that "We're doing the color run! No questions. I've registered all of us. This is happening" What's an hour drive to participate in The Happiest 5k On The Planet.

Yesterday, was The Color Run Check-In Party. At Whole Foods. Next to the Chipotle. Could it get any better? I mean, seriously. That's a win win.. win. Everything about Check-In was fun. Waiting in line, all the Color Run flags blowing in the wind, collecting gear, shopping for more gear. The kaleidoscope photo booth!

So here are a few snapshots from yesterday of what I deemed extremely exciting fun. Expect live updates of the color fun today!

HOW TO START A BLOG: A STEP BY STEP GUIDE

HOW TO START A BLOG: A STEP BY STEP GUIDE

Wednesday, May 14, 2014
How to start a blog, tips for starting a blogging, blogging 101, self hosted blogging, wordpress blog

I get asked the question: "So, how do you start a blog?" on a pretty regular basis. It's usually accompanied with Why did you start blogging. The why is an important part of starting a blog, but I'll get to that in minute. Since I get this question often, I thought I would just sit down and share how to start a blog. Hopefully I can encourage you to take the plunge, if you're teetering on the fence about joining us in blogland. If you're new to the blogging world, a hearty Welcome! Hopefully you find some helpful info here!

Let's get started! First things first..

• DECIDE WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO BLOG ABOUT. This goes back to the Why of blogging. I started blogging because I wanted to create a happy, creative space where I could share what I love: fashion, food, beauty tips + memorable life moments, and connect with other young women through those things. It's about building relationships and hopefully sharing a little inspiration, whether that be beauty or fashion inspiration, or even inspiring someone to get in the kitchen and try a new recipe! Lifestyle blogger here!

So why do you want to blog. What do you enjoy? What are you passionate about? Find your niche. Do you love fashion? Great! Fashion blogging is your niche. Share and style the latest trends, share your personal style, help others find their personal style! Maybe you're a young mom. Mommy blogger would be your path. Share things you've learned as a mom, talk about your kids, host kid friendly giveaways, and review kid friendly products. Maybe fitness blogger is your niche. Share ways to stay fit and maintain healthy eating. There are so many different niches that you can choose from. You can zone in on one topic or incorporate more than one, which would fall under the lifestyle blogger niche.

Here are a few examples of bloggers rocking there niche!

• Fashion Blogger  |  Because Shanna Said So.
• Fitness Blogger  |  Lauren Gleisberg.
• Beauty Blogger  |  Maskcara.

• DECIDE WHICH BLOGGING PLATFORM TO USE. You can create a free blog on Wordpress or Blogger, as I have. This just works best for me right now.  A lot of blogs are created using the Wordpress blogging platform. Personally, I am very content with Blogger and have learned a lot about coding through it! ( Major Bonus ). When deciding what platform to use you need to determine whether you want a hosted or open source self-hosted platform. A hosted platform is housed on the platform's server. So, if you use Blogger, your blog is hosted on the Blogger server; if you use Wordpress.com, your blog is housed on the Wordpress.com server. A self-hosted blog is housed on your own server, which is usually a third party that you pay to host your blog. For instance, if you use Wordpress.org you can download the open source version of the software and upload it to you own hosting and then run everything yourself.  Web Hosting Hub is one of the most reliable options for this. It starts at just $4.99 a month + you get a free domain name included in your hosting package for the first year, and it is easy to navigate if you're a beginner.

• Hosted Blog Pro: Hosted sites make it super easy for you to start a blog and get a feel for it without spending any money right out of the starting gate. You're free to focus on your blog posts without having to really know how the system works. This is the easiest option if you're a complete beginner. Wordpress.com and Blogger are both free platforms.

• Self-hosted Pro: You own it all, and control it all. The con to that is you have to become comfortable with HTML and CSS so you can really customize your blog.

Web Hosting Hub has a one-click-installation option that is perfect for beginners! This will help you get your blog online quickly, and you don't have to be computer savvy to do it!

Self-hosting Options:
 Web Hosting Hub.com
• Blue Host.com
• Site Ground.com

CHOOSE YOUR BLOG & DOMAIN NAME.Your blog/domain name is important. It gives people a snapshot of your blog. My blog name is more personal. The town that I live in is small. In a way it's kind of like living in the boondocks, if you come from or aspire to live in a big city. That's where the Boone comes from, Boondocks. It's my way of representing, with affection, where I come from. I happen to be one of those people that aspires to live in a big hustle and bustle city, and I also love fashion. If you've been following along for a little bit, you'll know that I adore owls. Owls with big eyes! So, the Owl represents my love of big cities and fashion. It's the hopeful dreamer in me. A big city heart in a small town girl. Boone+Owl represents me; It's where I'm from, what I love, and it's my dreams.

That is what your blog name should be. Choose something that has meaning to you. The world of blogging is quite over saturated so go for a simple name that represents you or what your blog is about. You want people to remember your blog easily. Make a list of potential names. Play around with it. Then sift through and pick the best match for you and the blog space and content that you want to create! Make it your own!

+ Just so we're straight
Blog Name = Boone + Owl
Domain = booneandowl.blogspot.com
URL = http://booneandowl.blogspot.com

You don't have to make your Blog name and your Domain name the same, but I do recommend it. This is important - When you're picking your Domain, check other social media to make sure that it's available on those sites as well. If you use the same name on your blog, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc, it will help solidify your brand.

Here's a fun tool to help you find the perfect Blog/Domain Name
• Name Mesh.com

Style Your Blog. Do you want your blog to be colorful? Maybe you like a minimalist approach. Do you like modern clean lines? You want your design to stand out, but not be distracting from your content. Decided on a color scheme, a theme, how many columns you want, and what sidebar items you want displayed. If you're not HTML and CSS savvy, then you'll need to enlist the help of someone who is! There are some awesome graphic designers out there that can help you hone in on a theme, and design your blog elements for you. Some will even install your new blog design. They often offer pre-made templates that you can purchase as well.

Some talented graphic designers to help you create a beautiful space -
• Melissa Rose Design
• Aubrey Kinch Design
• Rekita Nicole Design
• Kate Jordan Design

If you want to try your hand at blog design here are two of my favorite sites with great tutorials -
• xomisse
• Design Your Own Blog

I personally prefer to tinker with my blog's design myself. I'm picky that way. The design is always being tweaked and improved. I'm the kind of person that looks at my blog as never quite finished. I love creating new elements. It's actually a lot of fun. So if you have a designing bend, I encourage you to tinker with it. Read a few tutorials and test your hand at coding!

Content Is King. Put out great content and the readers will come! ( thanks Kristen! ). As one of my blogging friends put it: Be you. Be original. Consistent, quality content is vital to your blogging endeavors, but always make sure it's genuine. Find your writing voice, and share your content from that space. If you're naturally playful with your words let that be a part of your writing. Always just be yourself. That's what will keep people coming back: Great content and a genuine voice.

Here are some bloggers that are completely themselves and own their blogging voice!
• Jillian Lorraine
• The Freckled Fox
• Much Love Illy

Create a schedule. Whether you blog everyday ( what sorcery! ), three to four times a week, or maybe  alternate weekends. Find a schedule that works for you and stick to it! Readers will learn your schedule and keep coming back.

Visual aids are important. Every post on your blog should have a pinable image at the beginning of your post. This engages readers visually and encourages sharing of your content. Vertical images are repined more often so crop your image for pinablilty, and add a descriptive but concise title to draw interest! You don't need any fancy or expensive tool for this. Picmonkey will do the trick if you're a beginner.

If you're feeling computer savvy, and use Blogger, here is a great tutorial for adding a custom pin-it hover button to your blog images - How To Add A Pinterest Hover Button To Blogger Images.

Another visual aid that is wonderful are videos. Try a how-to approach to your area of expertise! Those are the most searched and viewed videos. Here is a great example of a how-to video done well - Twist me Pretty. Just scroll done Abby's post a little bit for the video.

Engage your readers! Ask them a question at the end of your post. If you did a fashion post ask them what trend their loving right now, or how they would have styled the main piece in your outfit. Make them a part of it and help them engage with your content. A huge part of this is making it easy for your readers to comment on your blog. Don't make your readers login to anything. If it's too difficult for them to comment, they won't.

• Disqus is THE option for easy commenting. It works with Wordpress and Blogger and just takes a simple one time install to automatically add it to all of your posts. I use Disqus, as do most of the blogs I faithfully read and come across in my blog discovering. It's a fantastic tool!

+ Remember, you might not always receive positive feedback, it happens. Don't let that discourage you! If someone leaves a negative comment, take it with a grain of salt and keep on trucking! It's not always necessary to respond to those kinds of comments. If you do choose to respond, respond with a clear head and not out of discouragement.

TWEET. SHARE. PIN. REPEAT. Tweet about your posts, share them on Instagram, pin them on Pinterest. If you don't share your content readers won't know it's there! Make sure everyone can follow you on all of your social media and make sure it's easy to do so. Put your social media buttons in a location on your blog where they are seen readily, and ensure that they open your social media in a new window.

Network with your readers!

I have my TwitterFacebookInstagram, and Pinterest apps all lined up on my iPhone so I can easily share and engage with my followers as I come and go. Share with them! Blogging is about building a relationship with your readers. Think of them as your friends. What would you share with your friends? Share that with your followers. Tweet it, Instagram it, Pin it, post it on your blog's Facebook page! You have to connect!

Since there are times when you can't be on your phone, use a social media management app like Hootsuite or Buffer to schedule tweets, posts on Google+, and your blog's Facebook page. This will be a life saver, and a time saver!

+ Once you get started, check out my mini series, Grow Your Blog, for some helpful tips on growing your blog through Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Image SEO!

PEANUT BUTTER SUGAR COOKIES

PEANUT BUTTER SUGAR COOKIES

Thursday, May 8, 2014
Peanut Butter Sugar Cookie Recipe, Betty Crocker

Hey! So I'm swearing off of wheat. I may or may not have a more severe wheat allergy than I thought, and I'm determined to find out just how bad it is! If I feel better in a week, I can kiss toast, cake, brownies, and cookies goodbye, at least the super yummy versions of them! This Peanut Butter Sugar Cookie recipe is my ode to wheat filled deliciousness. You know me though, I'll set about creating a gluten free sweet and then you'll have the recipe for that too!

I needed a cookie. A peanut butter cookie to be exact. I had no flour or JIF all natural peanut butter. In an act of desperation, I grabbed a sugar cookie mix, the chocolate PB2, a stick of butter, brown sugar, and some apple sauce, and started baking. In case you're wondering what in the world PB2 is: PB2 is powdered peanut butter. It is all natural, preservative free, and contains no artificial sweeteners. It can be reconstituted with any liquid really ( I prefer milk, especially chocolate ). You can make smoothies, or use it in cooking and baking! PS. It has less fat than regular peanut butter. So many wins. You can discover it here, and search for stores near you that carry it!

Fun fact: I am incapable of making a peanut butter cookie with any form of creamy peanut butter. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong! Do you know a good creamy peanut butter cookie recipe? Mine crumble to pieces.

Onward! Here is my modified peanut butter cookie recipe. A peanut butter sugar cookie might sound a little odd, but they were delicious!

You will need:

1 package sugar cookie mix
1/3 of a cup of chocolate PB2
2 tbsp dark brown sugar
1 stick of unsalted butter
1/4 of a cup apple sauce

Preparation

Preheat oven to 375˚
Line a baking sheet with non stick aluminum foil or parchment paper.

Melt butter and set aside to cool for a few minutes. In a medium mixing bowl combine sugar cookie mix, brown sugar, apple sauce, and PB2. Mix in melted butter until you have a semi-moldable dough.  If the dough is a touch thick you can add a splash of milk. Roll dough into two inch balls and pull in half. Place on lined baking sheet pointy side up! Bake for 8-10 minutes, or just until slightly golden on the small peaks.

• Because of the sugar cookie base these peanut butter cookies are lighter in color. If you leave them in the over until they are fully golden brown they will burn and be incredibly hard after cooling!

That's it! Place cookies on a cooling rack to set up a little bit, or eat them nice and hot, with a glass of milk of course! Make that chocolate milk!

What's your favorite cookie recipe? I'd love to know!
